Module 8Deploy: TestFlight to App Store 11 min

Beta testing with TestFlight

Get your app onto real devices — yours and your testers' — before the public sees it.

TestFlight is Apple's beta distribution system. It lets you (and up to thousands of invited testers) install pre-release builds on real iPhones. Always ship to yourself via TestFlight before submitting — it's the closest thing to the real App Store experience.

Test it yourself first

  1. 1Install the TestFlight app from the App Store on your iPhone.
  2. 2In App Store Connect ▸ your app ▸ TestFlight, add yourself as an internal tester (uses your Apple ID).
  3. 3Open TestFlight on your phone and install the build. Use the app as a real user for a day.

Invite a few outside testers

  1. 1Create an external testing group and add testers by email.
  2. 2The first external build needs a quick Beta App Review (lighter than full review).
  3. 3Testers get an email, install via TestFlight, and can send you feedback and screenshots.
What to watch for in beta

Real-device testing catches what the simulator can't: behavior on cellular vs Wi-Fi, how the AI feature feels with real latency, layout on your actual screen size, and whether entries survive real-world use. Fix what testers hit, upload a new build, and repeat until it's boring to use.

Note

TestFlight builds expire after 90 days, which is a healthy forcing function: it nudges you to keep shipping rather than polishing forever.
